1. Download the file in the “Materiales Educativos Digitales” section and make photocopies for students.

2. Have the beam projector ready, as well, to show a piece of news.

3. Print the article (C+P) and make copies for students.

4. Tell students THE GUARDIAN is a very important British newspaper, a reliable mass media.

5. Distribute the article, ask students to read the headline “TOKYO OLYMPICS POSTPONEDTO 2021DUE TO CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC” and discus what the article might be about.

6. Invite students to work in groups of 3 and organize how they are going to read the article. You may suggest they read 2 paragraph each and then discuss it , that they underline new words and help each other with their meanings, etc.

7. Set a time limit for the reading of the article and ask these questions,

a)       Is the headline clear and simple for readers?

b)       What type of information is given?

c)       Why are there some sentences quoted “  ----“?

d)       What paragraphs show the main information and which ones show supporting information?

8. Invite groups of students to share with the class their opinions about the article.

9. Distribute the reading and ask students to read the headline and tell you if it is the same news as in the previous session.

10. Both are about the Olympics so ask students to read this piece of news and find differences with the other one. They can use their copies and use them in this session.

11. Invite students to work in pairs and discuss those differences in terms of shorter, longer sentences, more words to describe or fewer words, quotes, etc.

12. Ask some volunteers to share their comparison and have the rest of the class say what they think.

2. Review active and passive voice with one example on the board.

3. Tell students the passive voice is widely used in the news and it has a different effect on the reader and the listener. You may use a couple of examples in Spanish to compare and contrast the effect rather than simply translating.

4. Distribute the worksheet and ask students to identify the mistakes in the sentences to correct.

5. Monitor the activity and help as needed-

6. Invite students to read the incorrect sentences first and have the class agree or disagree. Say which ones are incorrect.

7. Have some volunteers read the correct sentence.

8. Tell students that they are going to practice the difference between active and passive voice so they can use it more confidently when working with newspaper articles.

9. Distribute the worksheet and ask students to complete the 18 sentences and classify them as active(A) or passive (P).

10. Monitor the activity and make sure that students are discussing and working together.

11. Invite volunteers to read first the passive voice sentences, then the rest of the exercises.

5. Ask students to check their answers in pairs and share their results with the class.

8. Distribute the worksheet and ask students to work in groups of 3.

Tell them they are going to work as fast as they can to classify these sentences as active or passive. If the sentence is passive they need to ad the corresponding verb form and check punctuation as well.

9. Set a time limit and make sure students are working as a team.

10. When time is up, invite groups to share their answers. You may want to start with the headlines that use a passive voice.

11. Make sure that students identify correctly the passive voice in the headlines. How was punctuation?
