1. Download the files and make copies for students of the activities  suggested in the  “Materiales Educativos Digitales” section.

2. Ask students who Justin Bieber, Ellen Degeneres, and  Charlie Sheen are. If they don’t know some of them, tell them briefly they are actors and what they are famous for or any other piece of information you have to share.

3. Even if students don’t know them, they will be able to work on this activity.

4. Ask students why headlines are important.

5. Before you distribute the worksheet, use a black marker to cover the actual headlines at the bottom of the page. Or you can leave them and ask students to write different headlines based on the real ones.

6. Tell students they are going to read some news about these famous people and write a headline for each piece of news.

7. Read the news and help with vocabulary.

8. Suggest students underline keywords and /or pieces of information to help them understand the news easily.

9. Ask students to sit with another student and read their headlines, make suggestions, and help each other.

10. Ask students to share with the class their headlines and write on the board the top 5 headlines the class voted for.

11. Tell students they are going to review the 5 Ws and the H. Ask them what they refer to (WH_ questions)  and how important they are when analyzing a piece of news.

12. Distribute the worksheet and invite students to work in pairs.

13. Ask students to tell you some news they read about or heard about to work with. You can also have one news in English ready beforehand and use it with the whole class. Another option is that students can open their textbooks and use a piece of news from there.

14. Ask students to write the 5 Ws and the H questions whose information can be found in that news.

15. Invite some students to read their questions and discuss how important those questions are to identify and analyze news.

1. Have the beam projector ready to show the video suggested in the “MaterialesEducativosDigitales” section, and download, print and make photocopies for students of the file for the second activity.

2. Tell students they have been working with different headlines to practice reading journalistic news. Review what a ‘headline’ is and its characteristics.

3. Tell students they are going to learn 5 ways of practice with headlines and they need to make a list of these 5 tips with an example as it is presented in the video.

4. Play the video and make sure you pause it to paraphrase and comment with students the tips and recommendations this teacher is giving.

5. Stop the video right after the 5 tips have been given and write on the board a headline. You can make it up and prepare a couple beforehand. For example, “Students get the gold medal in English.” And apply these points so students can understand how they work.

6. Continue projecting the video, now from 4:48 where a headline is presented with variations for students to identify them and discuss them.

7. This first half of the video is what students need to review how to read news headlines.

8. Invite students to work in pairs and talk about these 5 ways by using their notes.

9. Distribute the worksheet and read the lists of words for students to review vocabulary and learn new ones. Do not take a lot in giving explanations to illustrate the vocabulary, but encourage students to guess the meaning. You can start by asking students how many of those words are similar in Spanish.

10. Set a time limit and ask students to find to search the words.

11. When time is up, invite students to sit with another classmate, compare their puzzles, and complete them.

12. Ask students which words are sections of the newspaper, which ones are related to the news, and which ones are about journalism.
